How FDI Reshapes Host Markets’ Trade Profile and Politics

A new study coauthored by UCR Political Science Professor Steven Liao examines how foreign direct investment (FDI) reshapes host countries’ trade patterns and politics. Analyzing global and Vietnamese firm-level data, the authors find that FDI not only boosts export diversity and volume but also fosters political coalitions favoring trade liberalization.
