Assistant Professor (951) 827-5510 Professor Erdem completed her graduates studies at Stanford University, where she also spent a year as a lecturer. Her research is in the field of comparative politics and focuses on identity politics, ethnic conflict, and institutional choice, with a regional concentration in Central Asia and the Turkic world. Her dissertation, "Political Salience of Ethnic Identities: A Comparative Study of Tajiks in Uzbekistan and Kurds in Turkey," investigates why levels of political salience of ethnic identity are different between the two ethnic groups. Her next project will expand this analysis to all ethnic groups in former Ottoman and Soviet areas.
